How It Works
Percentages are one of the most fundamental concepts in everyday mathematics. A percentage simply means "per hundred" — it expresses a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred."
Finding a percentage of a number: Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. Formula: Result = (Percentage × Number) / 100. Example: 15% of 80 = (15 × 80) / 100 = 12.
X is what percent of Y: Divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. Formula: Percentage = (X / Y) × 100. Example: 25 is what percent of 200? = (25 / 200) × 100 = 12.5%.
Percentage change: Measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value. Formula: ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. Example: A price rose from $50 to $65 → ((65 − 50) / 50) × 100 = 30% increase.
