How It Works
The arithmetic mean (commonly called "the average") is one of the most fundamental measures of central tendency in statistics and everyday life. It provides a single representative value for a set of numbers.
Formula: Average = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values. Example: The average of 4, 8, 15, 16 = (4+8+15+16) / 4 = 43 / 4 = 10.75.
The mean is sensitive to outliers — very high or very low values can pull it significantly away from the "middle." In such cases, the median (middle value) may be more representative.
Common uses include calculating grade point averages (GPA), finding average sales figures, statistical analysis, financial modelling, and everyday comparisons.
